WAMS Mediator Certification: 1991
Accomplishments: Mr. Shelton has mediated
over 500 cases and has been a mediator and arbitrator exclusively since
2000. His ADR career began in 1987 when he was a trial lawyer with a
Seattle firm known especially for its personal injury, employment, and
civil rights work. Mr. Shelton's 30-year law practice included
employment and civil rights cases and later focused on brain injury,
bicycle, motorcycle accidents, products liability, premises, and
medical negligence cases. He has mediated the widest range of civil
claims, including commercial and real estate as well as tort claims. He
has regularly been asked to serve as a sole or swing arbitrator in
UM/UIM or other arbitrations.
Whether dealing with a "seven figure" claim or
lesser amount, Mr. Shelton has a reputation for being relentless but
patient and diplomatic. He is known for his attention to detail, being
a quick study, and perseverance in following up the case that does not
settle on the mediation date.
Mr. Shelton is a member of the Washington State
Supreme Court Committee on Pattern Jury Instructions ("the WPI
Committee"), on which he has served for 30 years. He has been
chairperson and/or lectured at many CLE seminars regarding mediation
and litigation. Mr. Shelton served as a chairperson or officer of many
bar association and community organizations, including the American Bar
Association Journal's Advisory Board, Seattle Public Defender
Association, Washington State Brain Injury Association, Bicycle
